Combinatorics of NMR and ESR spectral simulations

Combinatorial techniques which provide information on intensity and signal patterns for NMR and ESR spectra are reviewed. It is shown that these techniques can be applied to both I3C and proton NMR of molecules as well as to predict the hyperfine pattern in the ESR spectra of complex polyatomic radicals.

Combinatorics of NMR and ESR spectroscopy of C60H36 isomers

We have considered combinatorial and group theoretical analysis of three recently synthesized isomers of C60H36. We have obtained the generating functions for nuclear spin species of the protons and C nuclei, and special cases of those functions yield the NMR spectral patterns. Our NMR results for three isomers with C1, C3 and T symmetries agree with experiment. We have also predicted the ESR h...

The evolution of biomedical EPR (ESR)

Since the first EPR/ESR spectrum of a paramagnetic substance was published over 70 years ago, the technical improvements did not occur until after/during World War II with the advent of radar technology. The approaches to biomedical problems started somewhat later with the real burst of activity starting after the birth of the spin label technique about 50 years ago. The applications to protein...

Fasciola hepatica infection in a 65-year-old woman.

Fascioliasis is an infectious disease caused by fasciola or liver fluke. Humans are accidental hosts to these flatworms. The World Health Organisation considers fascioliasis an important human parasitic disease. In Europe, Australia and Northern America, the disease is rare, but should have a high index of suspicion in patients who have lived in or travelled to endemic areas. Although it can be...

A 65-Year-Old Female from Connecticut with Orf Infection

The virus, which causes orf and induces acute pustular skin lesions in sheep and goats, is transmissible to humans yet is rarely observed in North America. We present a case of a 65-year-old female farmer from Connecticut who contracted orf from her sheep. The clinical and histopathologic features, important to arrive at the correct diagnosis of this uncommon yet important infection, are descri...
